Salvadore Dalí

We were discussing Dalí, my BFFs and I, and this painting was mentioned. Swans Reflecting Elephants. It's worth a post. The only problem I have is with the title of the work. It's a total give away! It should be called "When you see it you'll shit bricks..." or whatever former hipster meme goes that way. Then you know to look for something but it won't immediately be apparent to look for swans reflecting elephants. Just my two cents.

I really love this picture:

See the wires?

I happen to know they had to do this in twenty-eight takes over six hours. I'm sure the cats were hard to surprise after the first one and Dalí conceived it so he wasn't surprised and yet they all look surprised. And what a delightful arc of water they made! This picture is just all kinds of fun and not a bit surreal. What is this photo called? Surprise! No. Where Did All The Gravity Go?! No. What about Surprise Reflected in Cat's Eyes? No. It's called "Dalí Atomicus" The title of the photograph is a reference to Dalí's work Leda Atomica (in the photo with the cats, water and Dalí).

I love Dali and Swans is my favorite of his paintings. I also love the photo. Can you imagine what those poor cats went through over and over again? Dali was pretty cool. I read his life story years ago and he just never had a fucking chance. His brother died and his parents had him a few years later and named him after the dead boy and tried to pretend they were the same kid. Sad shit.

Why doesn't anyone but me want to talk about Dali? Damn it...

Please say some more! I love it when you post here! Tell me why he had an anteater for a pet?

I knew a family who lost their oldest son and named their next son the same name as the firstborn. Which was also the name of the father. The second born died as a teen so there are now two Juniors in the same grave plot.

I don't know why he had an anteater as a pet. I wish I still had that book. It was freaky. His parents were all kinds of nutty. Tried to give him the same memories as the first Salvadore. I can't imagine how fucked up that would make a kid. Personally, I think he just reveled in being a fucking weirdo and that's why he had an anteater as a pet. He was a strange, strange man. I think I'll put a clip of him up on my blog playing that old 50s game show where they had to guess who the contestant was. He was cool. I wouldn't have let him babysit, you understand, but he was cool.

How tragic for that family. That makes no sense to me... why you would do that to a child. It's creepy and weird and it is disrespectful to the child you lost. Of course, I've never went through that *knock on wood* so I can't really judge but it's still so very, very sad for all concerned. I can't even imagine losing not one but two children. Heartbreaking.
