Eternal Flame Falls, Chestnut Ridge, NY

The Eternal Flame Falls is a small waterfall in the Shale Creek Preserve, a section of the Chestnut Ridge Park in New York. It may be the only falls of its kind on the planet.

It usually flows in early spring or after heavy rains. There are several unique things about this falls. It's thirty foot span falls over two segments of sloping shale as well as a small cave about five feet up from the creek bed. In this cave there is a fissure which releases natural gas and when it is ignited it creates a flame about 4-8 inches in height. If the flow of water is high, the light is diffused behind the curtain of water like a lampshade.

According to this page, as you approach the falls you are met with the smell of rotting eggs. I didn't think natural gas had a smell. I thought the odor came from chemicals added to alert humans to leaks. Oh well. I know hot springs can sometimes smell of sulpher.

All the times I explored around New York state and I never heard of this! See? Wonders in your own back yard.

That's twice in three weeks you've gotten overplayed staples of 70s/80s radio stuck in my head. So you get this in return.

That said, the falls are pretty cool. I've never heard of those ones before! I need to find cool places like these to write about for the June 1st relaunch.

Oh it wouldn't be that song by the BANGLES would it? Too late!! Ok I'm going to click the link. I know it's the Bangles.

That was evil. However the Bagles song is now out of my head, so thanks. Everything else that's good and sunshiny is gone too.

Bagels...haha. Pronounced "baggels".

Hey, you have been watching Community!

Fun fact: I actually own both Rank Sinatra albums, by the way. You haven't lived until you've heard him tear through Christina Aguilera's 'Beautiful'. Or, even better, Foreigner's 'I Wanna Know What Love Is'.

Oh, God, I just found a live version on YouTube. Apologies in advance.

You have two albums from someone who sounds like a demon from the bowels of hell? Interesting...If he does Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" I'll post it here.

Indeed. He's the 'zombie lounge singer from Down Under - six feet down under'.

He doesn't do Journey, unfortunately/fortunately, but he does do 'Kokomo', 'Never Tear Us Apart', 'Take On Me', 'Total Eclipse', 'Up Where We Belong', 'I Think We're Alone', 'Don't You Want Me Baby?', 'Last Christmas', 'Heaven' - all sort of horrid 80s pockmarks. And look! Free downloads!
